New Delhi, July 24 (KNN) A workshop titled “Trade Remedies and MSMEs: Building Capacity for Fair Trade” was held on July 15, 2025, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
It was jointly organised by the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The workshop aimed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by raising awareness about available trade remedy mechanisms and encouraging their active engagement in these processes.
The workshop focused on sensitising MSMEs to the strategic importance of trade remedy instruments—such as anti-dumping and countervailing duties—in addressing market distortions.
It featured deliberations on the challenges MSMEs face in accessing these remedies and explored strategies to overcome procedural and institutional barriers.
It served as a platform for focused discussions, bringing together key policymakers, leading trade remedy experts, and a diverse group of MSME industry representatives from across sectors.
At the workshop, Siddharth Mahajan, Joint Secretary and Director General, DGTR, emphasised the importance of smaller enterprises coming together to form associations in order to effectively represent their collective interests in trade remedy proceedings.
The event featured two in-depth technical sessions aimed at strengthening industry understanding of trade remedy mechanisms and addressing the specific challenges faced by MSMEs.
These sessions explored the legal and institutional dimensions of trade remedies, as well as the data-related hurdles that often limit MSME participation in key investigations.
Sumanta Chaudhuri, Principal Advisor, International Trade Policy Division, CII, highlighted the growing intricacy of global trade dynamics and underscored the role of coordinated institutional support in safeguarding domestic industry interests.
The discussions underscored the vital importance of coordinated institutional support and strong legal preparedness to help MSMEs effectively safeguard their interests against unfair trade practices.
