Top gainers & losers today: Sensex soars 1,000 pts, NTPC, Kotak & Axis Bank lead gains, defence stocks surge

Shares of NTPC, Kotak Mahindra, Axis Bank, Power Grid and Bajaj Finserv led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, while Titan, IndusInd, M&M, Trent and Infosys traded as major laggards.

Banking and energy sectors outperformed all indices. The broader index strengthened for the sixth consecutive trading session, driven by positive global cues and fresh foreign fund inflows. Sensex jumped 1017.85 pts or 1.32 per cent to 77,923.36 as at 12.31 pm, and Nifty 50 climbed 294.70 pts or 1.26 per cent to 23,645.10.

Nifty midcap 100 rose 1.49 per cent and Nifty smallcap 100 gained 1.39 per cent.

Top gainers & losers today

NTPC shares led the gainers with 4.61 per cent increase to ₹367.50 on the NSE as at 12.37 pm.

Kotak Mahindra followed with a 4.35 per cent gain to ₹2,169.35, after hitting a 52-week high at ₹2,184.25. The bank had recently announced the appointment of Bhavnish Lathia as the new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Vyomesh Kapasi, Head, Consumer Bank – Product as a member of Group Management Council and a Senior Management Personnel of the Bank.

Axis Bank shares rose 2.84 per cent to ₹1,100.50.

Power Grid Corporation shares surged 2.67 per cent to ₹290.65 and Bajaj Finserv stock was up 2.55 per cent to ₹1,894.40. The company had acquired Chitradurga Bellary REZ Transmission.

On the losing side, Titan shares declined 2.52 per cent to ₹3,082.90.

IndusInd followed with a 1.92 per cent fall to ₹673.70. The stock has been in focus following the appointment of Grant Thornton Bharat to conduct a forensic review of discrepancies in its derivatives portfolio, amounting to approximately ₹1,577 crore over the past six years. Track live updates here

M&M shares declined 1.02 per cent to ₹2,773.30.

Trent shares fell 1.28 per cent to ₹5,084.10 and IT major Infosys dipped 0.43 per cent to ₹1,585.65.

A total of 2,878 stocks were traded on the NSE, of which 2,069 of them advanced and 747 declined. Transformers and Rectifiers, Senco Gold, Kotak, JSW Holdings, IGIL, Coffee Day Enterprises were among the 183 stocks that hit the upper circuit on the NSE.

BSE SmallCap stocks Salasar Techno and Power Mech lead the gainers on the BSE, rallying 20 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively. Power Mech shares are in focus on bagging a ₹579 Crore order from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Meanwhile, shares of Jyoti Structures, JSL and KEC International dipped nearly 5 per cent.

In addition, defence stocks such as HAL, MTAR Technologies and Zen Technologies have gained momentum after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) last week accorded acceptance of necessity (AoNs) to eight capital acquisition proposals amounting over ₹54,000 crore.
