Sensex, Nifty 50 volatile, Metal, realty & defence stocks shine, Tata Steel, BEL lead gainers

Equity benchmark indices staged volatility amid geopolitical situation after opening positive as retail inflation eased to a nearly six-year low of 3.16 per cent in April. Sensex declined 172.14 pts or 0.21 per cent to 80,976.08 as at 12.54 pm, and Nifty 50 slipped 10.75 pts or 0.04 per cent to 24,567.60. Volatility index dropped 3.96 per cent to 17.48.

Smallcap index rose over 1 per cent, while midcap stocks traded flat. On the sectoral front, metal and realty indexes rose 1-2 per cent, while bank, private bank and FMCG slipped. Defence index rose over 3 per cent following the Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam terror attack.

A total of 2,840 stocks were traded on the National Stock Exchange as at 12.32 pm, of which 2,139 advanced and 616 declined. Nearly 161 stocks, including Sagility, Sakthi Pumps, hit the upper circuit and 22 hit the lower circuit. 54 stocks (BSE, Authum Investment, Aster DM, Bharati Hexacom, Dalmia Bharat Sugar, Force Motors, BEL and BDL) hit 52-week high and 13 hit 52-week low.

Top gainers & losers

Shares of Tata Steel, Bharat Electronics, Shriram Finance, Hindalco and ONGC led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, while Tata Motors, Asian Paints, Cipla, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Power Grid declined.

Tata Steel shares gained as brokerages cheered the company’s Q4 performance. The stock traded 4.03 per cent higher at ₹155.45.

BEL followed with 2.49 per cent increase to ₹344.10.

Shares of Shriram Finance, Hindalco and ONGC soared close to 2 per cent.

On the flip side, Tata Motors fell 2.08 per cent to ₹693. The stock declined nearly 3 per cent following a 51 per cent decline in consolidated net profit for the March quarter. Asian Paints followed with 1.63 per cent drop to ₹2,286.70. Kotak Mahindra and Power Grid slipped nearly 1 per cent.

Shares in action

Shares of Mishra Dhatu Nigam (Midhani), DCX Inida, Zen Technologies and Mazagon Dock lead the uptick of defence index along with BEL and BDL.

In addition, shares of Bharti Airtel, GRSE, Cipla, Dalmia Bharat Sugar also reacted to Q4 show. HAL, Tata Power, Lupin, Hitachi, Berger Paints and other companies are set to announce their Q4FY25 results today. Track live updates.

Among smallcap stocks, HBL Engineering, Nuvama, Railtel and Ircon rallied 6-10 per cent. Aditya Birla Capital, Waaree Energies, Mazagon Dock, National Aluminium and Suzlon soared 4-6 per cent among midcap.

On the BSE, GRSE jumped 17 per cent, leading the gainers. While, Kaveri Seed, Syrma, VIP Industries and EPL depreciated 3-6 per cent.
