Shares of Bharat Electronics, Jio Financial, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Adani Ports and Bajaj Finance led the gainers of Nifty 50 constituents. Infosys, Eternal, Power Grid, HCL Tech and TCS depreciated.
Equity benchmark indices witnessed heightened volatility amid the geopolitical situation between India and Pakistan. Following the market rally in four years, investors booked profits post-ceasefire.
Sensex fell 710.69 pts or 0.86 per cent to 81,719.21 as at 12.15 pm, and Nifty 50 traded lower by 165.75 pts or 0.67 per cent at 24,758.95. The volatility index inched up 0.42 per cent to 18.47. Midcap and smallcap stocks traded with marginal gains.
About 1,979 stocks advanced and 792 declined of all the 2,851 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing. 166 stocks including Zen Tech, Sagility, Sterling and Wilson, and Senco Gold hit the upper circuit and 25 traded at lower circuit.
Top gainers & losers intraday
Sectoral indices were mixed, IT index declining over 1 per cent. PSU bank, pharma, healthcare and media gained 1-2 per cent. Defence stocks also gained momentum amid geopolitical situation.
BEL shares soared 4.52 per cent to ₹337.40, leading the gainers of Nifty 50. Jio followed with 2.24 per cent increase to ₹268.80.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories gained 1.99 per cent to ₹1,219.40. Adani Ports stock rose 1.56 per cent to ₹1,383.30 and Bajaj Finance gained 1.01 per cent to ₹9,110.
On the flip side, IT stocks Infosys, HCL Tech and TCS traded nearly 2-3 per cent lower.
Eternal stock declined 2.05 per cent to ₹234.60.
Shares of Bharat Dynamics rallied 8 per cent among midcap stocks. BSE, Cochin Shipyard, Yes Bank and Bank of India soared over 4 per cent. Among smallcap stocks, Redington, Sagility, IIFL, Zen Tech and Kaynes Technologies surged 5 per cent.
On the BSE, CARE Ratings, Tanla Plaforms led the gainers with 10-12 per cent uptick. UPL. Kfin Tech, PGEL and Chambal Fertilisers fell close to 5 per cent.
