New Delhi, May 19 (KNN) Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the government has received 70 applications for its Rs 23,000-crore Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), with small and medium enterprises comprising the majority of applicants.
These applications were submitted within just 15 days of the application window opening on May 1.
Vaishnaw highlighted that approximately 80 percent of the applications have come from small and medium enterprises, demonstrating broad industry interest beyond just large manufacturers.
The Rs 22,805-crore ECMS aims to address the significant demand-supply deficit in the electronic component segment.
According to the Electronic Industries Association of India (Elcina), without government intervention, this deficit could reach USD 248 billion by 2030, as the country works toward a projected USD 500 billion electronics production target.
The scheme allocates Rs 21,093 crore for sub-assemblies such as camera modules, multi-layered printed circuit boards (PCBs), flexible PCBs, and passive components.
An additional Rs 1,712 crore has been earmarked for parts used in sub-assemblies and capital goods essential for electronics manufacturing.
ECMS categorises components into four groups: Category A includes display and camera modules; Category B covers bare components like non-surface mount devices, multi-layered PCBs, and lithium-ion cells; Category C encompasses components such as flexible PCBs and SMD passive components; while Category D includes components used in manufacturing items from the first three categories as well as capital goods used in electronics manufacturing.
The government has established a three-month application window for Categories A, B, and C, while Category D applications will be accepted for a period of two years, both starting from May 1.
