New Delhi, Mar 12 (KNN) The renewable energy sector’s contribution to India’s total electricity generation has reached 22.49 percent in the 2024-25 fiscal year (until January), according to information provided by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Shripad Yesho Naik, Union Minister of State for Renewable Energy, shared this data in a written response to questions raised by CPI MP V Sivadasan.

The minister highlighted a steady growth trajectory in the renewable energy sector, with its contribution to total energy generation increasing from 17.28 percent in 2014-15 to 20.75 percent in 2023-24, as documented in the Renewable Energy Statistics Report 2023-24.

On February 11, Minister Naik had reaffirmed that the ministry is working toward achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030, in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement at COP26.

This goal differentiates between electricity generation, which measures the amount of electricity produced over time, and capacity, which represents the maximum electricity production potential.

According to India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement submitted in August 2022, the country aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels.

Additionally, India has committed to increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 50 percent (500 GW) of its installed power generation capacity by 2030.

The country has yet to update its NDC for the 2035 period.

In response to questions from BJP MP Jaggesh regarding solar power capacity and manufacturing, Minister Naik reported substantial growth in India’s solar sector.

Solar power capacity has expanded dramatically from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

Concurrently, India’s solar manufacturing capabilities have experienced significant development, with solar module manufacturing capacity rising from approximately 2 GW in 2014 to 67 GW currently, as documented in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers.
