Mumbai, Mar 6 (KNN) Lenovo, the global technology major, announced on Wednesday its strategic plan to manufacture all of its personal computer models in India over the next three years.
Senior executives revealed the company’s ambitious goal to achieve 100 percent local production for its PC business during this period, including its artificial intelligence-enabled PC offerings.
The announcement coincided with Lenovo’s celebration of 20 years of operations in India. Shailendra Katiyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India, disclosed that the company currently manufactures 30 percent of its total PC sales locally.
This figure is projected to increase to 50 percent by next year before reaching complete domestic production within three years.
Katiyal further announced that the company’s first AI-powered servers will begin rolling out from its Indian manufacturing hub starting April 1. This announcement was made during the company’s flagship event, Lenovo TechWorld India 2025, held in Mumbai.
In September of last year, Lenovo established a production facility in Puducherry, designed to manufacture approximately 50,000 enterprise AI servers and 2,400 high-end graphics processing units annually.
Beyond strengthening its manufacturing base, Lenovo is focusing on AI talent development and expanding its research and development capabilities in India.
The company announced plans for another R&D center in Bengaluru, underscoring its intention to position India as an AI hub.
The Chinese consumer electronics major reported significant growth in its AI operations in India. For the year-to-date period, Lenovo’s revenue in India has reached USD 2.5 billion.
Mathew Zielinski, President of International Markets at Lenovo, emphasized India’s strategic importance, describing it as “one of the most important markets in the world.”
Zielinski highlighted the dual role of Lenovo’s manufacturing operations in India, which serve both domestic needs and establish India as a major export hub. “For 2024, we built, shipped to India, and shipped out of India approximately 18,000 crore worth of products,” he stated.
The executive also noted the strong performance of Lenovo’s Motorola smartphone business in India, which has secured an 8 percent market share with growth rates in triple digits.
While exact figures were not disclosed, Zielinski indicated growth between 100-160 percent. The company claims to have achieved 100 percent domestic production of Motorola smartphones in India, which are being exported globally.
Lenovo operates its own manufacturing facility in Puducherry and has also established a partnership with Dixon Technologies.
Zielinski elaborated that the company’s AI hub in India would concentrate on developing next-generation AI GPU-based servers, encompassing hardware, software, firmware, and testing validation processes.
The company currently employs 14,000 people in India, with approximately 400 staff members working at its recently launched R&D center in Bengaluru, reinforcing its commitment to expanding its technological footprint in the country.
