New Delhi, Mar 27 (KNN) According to the latest data released by the Tea Board of India, the country exported 254 million kilograms (Mkg) of tea in 2024, making it the second-largest tea exporter in the world.

While Kenya retained its top position with over 500 Mkg in exports, India surpassed Sri Lanka, which had been a close competitor.

In 2023, India and Sri Lanka had nearly identical export figures, each around 231 Mkg. However, India outperformed its neighbor in 2024 by exporting 24 Mkg more, securing the second spot globally.

This achievement marks India’s second-best tea export performance, just behind the record 256 Mkg exported in 2018. The total revenue generated from tea exports in 2024 amounted to Rs 7,112 crore.

For the past several years, India’s tea exports remained in the range of 200-225 Mkg, except for the exceptional performance in 2018.

The recent surge in exports has revived hopes of reaching the ambitious 300-Mkg mark by 2030. India produces approximately 1,400 Mkg of tea annually, making it one of the largest tea producers in the world.

A significant portion of the export growth has been driven by the orthodox tea segment, which has benefited from various government schemes at both the central and state levels. Industry experts credit policy support for this success.

“With the favorable export policies introduced by the Centre and the backing from state governments, the tea industry is optimistic about expanding its export reach in the coming years,” said Prabir Kumar Bhattacharjee, secretary general of the Tea Association of India.

This remarkable achievement offers much-needed relief to an industry that has faced challenges for years, paving the way for a brighter future.
