Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) to collaborate on commercial shipbuilding initiatives. The agreement was signed on April 7 at GRSE Bhavan.
The partnership aims to jointly pursue construction opportunities for commercial vessels and offshore structures, targeting both global and domestic markets. The companies plan to combine their design capabilities, infrastructure, and project execution expertise to create a more efficient commercial shipbuilding model.
Under the MoU, SDHI and GRSE will share facilities, co-develop standard vessel platforms, and coordinate project management strategies to improve turnaround times and cost efficiency. The collaboration also focuses on developing a robust vendor and supply chain ecosystem through shared sourcing and procurement.
Beyond construction, the agreement covers cooperation in vessel trials and ship repair services. Both organizations have committed to building skilled manpower to support the long-term growth of India’s shipbuilding sector.
SDHI, formerly known as Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited, is India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company. Located on India’s west coast, the company operates a 662m x 65m dry dock with a fabrication capacity of 144,000 tons annually.
The partnership aligns with the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision and aims to strengthen the country’s indigenous commercial shipbuilding capabilities.
