Sensex climbs 1,000 pts, mid & smallcap stocks surge, Reliance, RBL Bank, Shriram Finance, Tata Tech, IndusInd, UltraTech shares in action

Banking, oil & gas, and pharma stocks drove the market surge, although IT experienced some selling pressure on Monday.

The broader market soared intraday amid sustained foreign fund inflows, also driven by heavyweight Reliance Industries.

Sensex climbed 1026.74 pts or 1.30 per cent to 80,239.27 as at 12.22 pm after opening at 79,343.63, Nifty 50 gained 295.50 pts or 1.23 per cent to 24,334.85.

On Friday, the benchmark indices ended in red, weighed down by heightened volatility amid ongoing Indo-Pakistan geopolitical tensions. 

Top gainers & losers today

Nifty Bank and PSU indices rose close to 2 per cent, while oil & gas surged 3 per cent.

Nifty midcap 100 rose 1.56 per cent to 54,417.05 and Nifty smallcap 100 gained 1.08 per cen to 16,725.95.

Shares of Reliance, Bharat Electronics, Sun Pharma, JSW Steel and Tata Steel led the gainers of Nifty 50 constituents, while Shriram Finance, Eternal (Zomato), HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance and Nestle depreciated.

Reliance Industries surged 4.76 per cent on the NSE to ₹1,362.30 as at 12.32 pm, leading the pack of gainers. The brokerages have retained optimism on the stock post Q4 results.

BEL followed with 3.04 per cent increase to ₹306.65.

Sun Pharma rose 2.74 per cent to ₹1,836.40. Steel majors JSW Steel and Tata Steel surged over 2 per cent at the time of writing.

On the flip side, Shriram Finance fell 4.51 per cent to ₹625.65. The stock has attracted varied outlooks following its latest quarterly results. 

Eternal, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance and Nestle slipped between 0.41 per cent to 0.78 per cent.

Stocks in action

Nearly 1,617 stocks advanced and 1,091 declined of all the 2,793 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange.

About 49 stocks hit upper circuit, while 65 hit the lower circuit. Gensol has hit another lower circuit.

UltraTech Cement was among the 17 stocks that hit 52-week highs today.

IndusInd Bank traded in green following the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation into the root cause of its forex derivatives related accounting discrepancies.

Among the midcap stocks, Cochin Shipyard, BDL, Mazagon Dock and Lupin surged 5-7 per cent, while smallcap stocks GRSE, Data Patterns, Sonata Software, MGL and CESE soared 4-9 per cent.

On the BSE, shares of Paras Defence, RBL Bank, DCB Bank rallied 9-11 per cent. Tejas Networks and Avantel tumbled 11 and 7 per cent, respectively.

Shares of RBL Bank rallied rallied 10 per cent to ₹207.07, despite a n 81 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) fall in net profit for the quarter ended March to ₹69 crore.

In addition to Reliance and RBL, shares of Maruti, Zensar Tech and Tata Technologies were also in action due to Q4 results. Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, Adani Green Energy, ATGL, IRFC, Hatsun Agro, UltraTech, TVS Motor and more will announce Q4 results today. Track live updates
